Notes for reading HoldCrunch Percentage data:
1. The HoldCrunch Percentage is calculated from NBA, NCAAB, NFL, NCAAF, MLB moneyline, spread and totals markets and covers both straight bets and parlays from those markets. Based on data from state reports we estimate these straight bet and parlay markets account for approximately 60% of total handle across all sports. The HoldCrunch Percentage is therefore an accurate representation of the price experience of a significant portion of customers by volume
2. The HoldCrunch Percentage calculation takes account of the relative popularity of market types in different sports. For example, the moneyline market may be more or less popular in one particular sport. Our focus is always to assess price in relation to where customers are putting their money. This is why we use a market weighting. For the same reason, the HoldCrunch Percentage calculation also takes account of the popularity of the main line vs other lines as well as pre-game vs in-game action
3. We also use a handle weighting for accuracy when combining HoldCrunch Percentages across sports. For example, we can see from selected state reports that NBA handle is about 1.4x that of MLB in April. The NBA HoldCrunch Percentage will therefore have a 1.4x higher weighting when combining the two individual NBA and MLB HoldCrunch percentages into a single number. This weighting means we are better reflecting the overall price experience of customers with any one brand in any single month. Not only that, we calculate this weighting at a per game level for each sport, so if we look at the HoldCrunch Percentage across sports for a particular day or week we have an accurate handle weighting. For example, in September when there are many MLB games and a smaller number of NFL games that are much bigger on a per game handle basis, we are able to produce an accurate HoldCrunch Percentage number across the two sports for any particular week
4. We’re often asked why the HoldCrunch Percentage is an accurate deduction against GGR for the cost of competing on price. Here’s the answer: If a book reports 10% GGR, 6% NGR and has a HoldCrunch of 10%, we are saying its NGR+ is 5% (margin after promo spend plus the cost of competing with the leaders on price). This additional 1% deduction from GGR to reflect the cost of equaling the leaders on price comes from the margin impact on both moneyline, spread and totals markets directly and the parlays that are derived from those same markets. So if a book’s GGR of 10% is 30% straight bets, 70% parlays, the 10% HoldCrunch is taking 3% from the straight bets (27%) and 7% from the parlays (63%). We do not know the proportion of parlays that are derived in whole or in part from moneyline, spread and totals markets, but there are many examples of exact matches between parlays and corresponding moneyline, spread and totals wagers, one of which is at the bottom of our HoldCrunch Calculations page. If anything, we believe the HoldCrunch Percentage is likely to be an underestimate of the parlay margin impact of competing with the leaders in moneyline, spread and totals markets
